Imagine Thinking a Non-Catholic Can Be Pope

Unless Catholics who accept Jorge Bergoglio as pope come to acknowledge that the following proposition is a Church teaching that must be believed with Divine and Catholic Faith and is not just an opinion of some theologians, they will continue to say things like, “We need a Catholic Pope”:

The public sin of manifest formal heresy per se (i.e., by its very nature) separates the heretic from the Church.

It is by the force of this public sin itself that separates the heretic from the Church.  No Church declaration is needed for the separation to take place.  This separation is essentially a matter of Divine Law and not ecclesiastical law.  A Church declaration only acknowledges that the separation took place at a particular time prior to the declaration and then juridically enforces its declaration (e.g., excommunication, removal from office, etc.).  Nevertheless, we do not need the Church’s declaration to come to the private judgment in conscience, but without juridical force, beforehand that a separation has indeed taken place.  Read this post and this post for further understanding.  The Church herself acknowledges that we can come to a private judgment in conscience prior to her declaration via her Code of Canon Law (see this post and this post) in which she instructs us that the FACT of public defection from the Catholic Faith causes loss of office WITHOUT a declaration.  A fact is perceived by the senses and apprehended by the intellect.  Therefore, a private judgment in conscience of public defection, when there is sufficient evidence, can be made by a simple layman.

Those who hold that it is the Church’s declaration that separates the heretic from the Church or that a pope can indeed be a public heretic and nevertheless remain pope until a future pope judges him in effect deny the above Church teaching.  If they deny the above teaching directly but without pertinacity, they are in material heresy.  If pertinacity is added, they are in formal heresy.

If the above Church teaching is accepted as a starting point, it will not be difficult for someone of good faith and will to come to reject Jorge Bergoglio as pope via the following arguments:

The public sin of manifest formal heresy per se separates the heretic from the Church.
But Jorge Bergoglio has committed the public sin of manifest formal heresy.
Therefore, Jorge Bergoglio is separated from the Church.

One who is separated from the Church is not a member of the Church.
But Jorge Bergoglio is separated from the Church.
Therefore, Jorge Bergoglio is not a member of the Church.

One who is not a member of the Church cannot be pope.
But Jorge Bergoglio is not a member of the Church.
Therefore, Jorge Bergoglio cannot be pope.
